Trumbull County

In Trumbull County, individuals with developmental disabilities have positions in retail, maintenance, dishwashing, food preparation, car washing, landscaping, and factory work.

Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Trumbull DD) is part of Project: Transformation, and is looking critically and making improvements to their services by utilizing a positive personal profile. They develop individualized employment by identifying strengths, skills, and interests of the individual served. Trumbull DD also has a local Employment First policy and is making organizational changes to better support community employment, including hiring a community employment manager.

Trumbull DD collaborates with Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities through the DODD-OOD partnership and as a Community Rehabilitation Partner. They have also formed an interagency agreement with the local school districts to better serve transition-age youth. The hope is for students to have community employment upon exiting the school system, and Trumbull DD will hire a transition coordinator to further support this initiative. Ohio Means Jobs has also been a strong collaborator around job development, and Trumbull DD has a relationship with the Chamber of Commerce and Business Network International (BNI) to network and build awareness in the community.

One individual had been looking for employment for the last two years and was not successful. He had worked in the community for 18 years, but wanted to find a new position. He loved music, so Trumbull DD partnered with other agencies to support him. Some of the activities he participated in before starting a microenterprise included conducting  informational interviews, observing Disc Jockeys, and writing a business plan with support from the Small Business Development Center. He has now had his own disc jockey business for over two years.

Staff has been extremely important and their dedication to Employment First and the individuals they serve has been very influential. The local community and businesses have also been very supportive. The relationships between Trumbull DD and the businesses have led to success in community employment.
