Lake County has several positions for individuals with developmental disabilities to work in the community. Some of these positions include: manufacturing, maintenance, and food service.
Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Lake DD) recently adopted a local Employment First policy to support community employment. They work with local school districts and VRP3 counselors to assist with students transitioning from school to adult services. Another practice to promote community employment are job clubs where individuals currently in a facility-based setting are exposed to community work experiences, taught job skills, and gain exposure to a variety of employment positions to become more self-aware of their interests and strengths.
Lake DD is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and multiple Rotary clubs. They partner with the Educational Service Center to host Project SEARCH. They also collaborate with Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) through the DODD-OOD Employment First Partnership.
Downtown Willoughby has been very supportive of the Employment First Initiative in Lake County. One individual enjoys working at two different establishments and has grown both personally and professionally. He is included in the work culture and social aspect of employment.
Utilizing job coaches has been influential for community employment success. Job coaches not only assist individuals, but also engage and educate employers about different supports and services making each position very individualized to best meet the needs of each employee.
