Some types of community employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities in Henry County include: janitorial, food service, clerical, logistics, retail, and maintenance.
The Henry County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Henry DD) embraces the Employment First Initiative, making community employment the first priority, and developing vocational goals based on a person’s interests. The county also utilizes the Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities partnership and works with the four local school districts to develop transition programs for students Henry DD and providers collaborate for a summer youth program that allows students to explore and gain exposure to different career options. The county also works with individuals with developmental disabilities to obtain drivers’ licenses that can promote independence and community integration.
One individual found success in the transition program. He was struggling while in school, but Henry DD was able to partner with the school district to allow him to work one a day a week in the community and then attend classes the other four days. His involvement in the community gave him the discipline and confidence to graduate from high school, the first one to do so in his family. He now has a full-time integrated position with benefits.
Community employment services have been provided in Henry County for several years which has led to the development of strong relationships with community employers. Employers are aware of the services in the county, and the county is looking at employment as a way for individuals to find holistic integration in the community.
