Individuals with developmental Disabilities in Brown County work in a variety of positions including: retail, food service, maintenance, seasonal, and in enclaves.
The Brown County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Brown DD) is developing local policies regarding employment. These policies will relate to transportation and aspects of day habilitation services. Brown DD is also continuing to train staff, who have dedicated themselves to the Employment First initiative, on person centered planning.
Brown DD works with the local Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) office, utilizes the OOD-DODD Employment First partnership, Ohio Means Jobs, and is collaborating with several other agencies regarding Employment First. Collaborations with other agencies and staff support have been very influential for community employment success.
One individual in Brown County has worked in food service for several years. In the beginning stages of employment, he received support from a provider but has become independent and no longer requires employment or residential supports.
Another individual worked in a sheltered workshop for several years and has transitioned community employment. She completed the OOD referral process and currently works for Brown DD. One example of the natural supports she has found include picture in lieu of written instructions.
